From the Stage to the Screen: Lessons on Visibility

The Curtain Rises

Waiting outside this door has become a familiar thing. Walking into the hallowed halls I used to once roam, although now I sit in the audience. Previously, I was the one on stage. Music plays as we wait, then finally, the moment we've been waiting for: the lights go down, the spotlight comes on, and the ride begins.

It got me thinking about my time on stage. That time drew me out of my shell and into the spotlight, kind of like what I do now with websites.

Stepping Into the Light

My sophomore year, I had the lead in the spring play. I was seen, not as me, but as Katrin, the child of immigrants who became a writer. The story reflects back on her childhood and what it was like growing up. The opening scene: me at a desk writing, spotlight on, then my opening monologue. Similar to the production I saw last night, only a different character and a different story.

Nerves settled in as I waited for it to start, but as soon as the lights came on, I settled into Katrin and her story. The audience seemed to settle in with me and come along for the ride.

It took a lot to step into Katrin. I had to step outside my quiet, conservative self and become someone else. These theater performances pushed me to dig deep and find myself. Not only did I have multiple monologues to memorize, but I had to draw the audience into my world, help them connect to the characters as I told the story.

This is the difference between being present and becoming noticed. You draw people into your world, show them who you are and your brilliance.

Your Business Deserves a Stage

Most small businesses don't bring their talent forward. They put on a performance that is what they think they need to be, not who they actually are. My job is to build your proverbial stage, a place where your most vibrant self shows up and is seen.

Remember: visibility isn't vanity. It's how the right people find you and connect with you.

Learning Your Lines

When I played Katrin, I had to learn my lines, so many lines! Now, as a web designer and developer, I have to help you perform. Think of your lines as your message and the clarity of it. I help draw that out.

Honing in on your message and story can be a process. I provide support as well. I'll hold calls, meditate with you, whatever you need to help tap into the story of you, your business, and bring it to life. When it lands, you feel it. It sinks into your body.

Design supports the telling of the story and makes the audience feel something and take action.

Is Visibility Calling You?

You might be feeling the nerves I felt as I waited for the spotlight to light me up, and that's ok. The nerves are good. It means you're onto something, so lean into that.

Have you been hiding, either by not doing anything with a website that's collecting dust, or simply needing to draw in more people? Has visibility been calling to you? Have you been wanting to increase your clients?

Now is the time to step onto the stage and into the spotlight. You might be feeling the nerves I felt as I waited for the spotlight to light me up, and that's ok. The nerves are good. It means you're onto something, so lean into that. Fill out the design inquiry now, nerves and all.
